This guide is part of the Google Analytics series

Guides in this series:

Make: Google

Model / Product: Analytics

Version: N/A

Objective / Info: Learn how to set up the site search feature in Google Analytics. This feature allows you to use analytics to capture and analyze search queries made on your sites search engine.

Visit in your web browser. Log in by clicking the "Access Analytics" if needed.
Identify and click the "edit" button to the far right hand side of the screen for the site that you want to add the search feature too.
Click the "Edit" link in the upper right hand corner of the profile settings page.
Scroll down the page until you reach the "Site Search" section. Select the "Do Track Site Search".
The query parameter field should appear beneath the previous section. Type the query parameter into field.
Note : You can identify your query parameter by performing a search on your site, then review the end of the url for a pattern similar to "results.php?keyword=". In this example "keyword" is the parameter.

You have the option of stripping the parameter out of future reports following setup. In this example we will use the default "No, do not strip query parameters out of URL" option so we can review all of the data. You can always come back and strip the parameter out later.
You also have the option of using categories in future reports following setup. In this example we will use the default option of "No" because there is only one category being used. You can always come back and add categories later.
Note : Categories may be useful if your site search offers the ability to use drop-down menus to refine a search.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "Save Changes" button.

From this point forward, the site search option should appear in the "Content" section with no links grayed out.
Clicking the "Site Search" button should expand the section with all links available.
This task should now be complete. If not, review and repeat the steps as needed. Submit any questions using the section at the bottom of this page.

Note :It may take some time before the searches begin to show in analytics. In this example we didn't check until 12 hours later and the data was there.
